Anna Carla and Valentin will explore phage-antibiotic combinations as an alternative strategy to combat bacterial infections to enhance treatment efficacy, delay antibiotic resistance, and protect the gut microbiota. As a first step, they will develop and perform a large-scale screening of phage-antibiotic combinations using E. coli as a model organism to uncover unknown antimicrobial interactions.

In a second time, Anna Carla will study the effects of synergistic phage-antibiotic combinations on synthetic gut bacterial communities to minimize the collateral damage to beneficial gut bacteria. Meanwhile, Valentin will focus on phage-derived enzymes that could be used in combination with antibiotics to potentially uncover distinct synergistic mechanisms.
